Welcome to Ebster Recreation Center: A Tribute to Decatur's Beacon Community

Explore the rich history of Decatur's Beacon Municipal Center, a significant site where African-American public schools once stood. Today, this location at West Trinity Place and Electric Avenue holds the legacy of the city's African-American community. The Ebster Recreation Center, situated here, is a testament to preserving this heritage while serving as a modern hub for community activities.

Ebster Recreation Center is not just a space; it's a tribute to Donald Grant Ebster, an inspirational figure in the Beacon community. Named in his honor, the center offers year-round programs and after-school activities, embodying his legacy of empowerment and storytelling.

In Spring 2015, the Ebster Recreation Center underwent renovations, rekindling its role as a cornerstone of community life. Adjacent to Ebster Pool and playground, this facility stands on the historic grounds of the former Trinity High School, symbolizing the enduring journey towards integration in the 1960s.

The original gymnasium and library building stand as enduring symbols of the past. These facades connect us to the history of Herring Street School, a reminder of the neighborhood's roots. Inside, the center offers a dynamic space that accommodates modern needs. A new gymnasium on the street level adds a contemporary touch, designed to complement the existing architecture. It caters to a range of activities, from after-school programs to community events. The lower level houses offices and flexible spaces, fostering a welcoming environment for families and children.

Step outside, and you'll find a peaceful courtyard, inviting community members to gather and connect. This space, brimming with camaraderie, reflects the spirit of the Beacon community.

Enter the historic Ebster gym front entrance to explore exhibits that showcase the site's history and the transformative role it played. Learn about the heritage that shaped Decatur and gain a deeper understanding of our shared story.

Decatur's Beacon Municipal Center is more than just a space; it's a bridge between the past and the present, a place where history lives on while the community thrives. Join us in experiencing this unique blend of preservation and modernity that defines our center.
