Community Gardens

Scott Park Community Garden

Since its establishment in 1992, the Decatur Community Garden has been a hidden gem tucked away in the "backyard" of the Decatur Recreation Center. It serves as a vibrant and thriving hub that not only beautifies the grounds but also fosters community pride and engagement.

Our organic community garden brings residents together in a harmonious blend of nature and community. Here, avid gardeners and enthusiastic beginners alike find solace and purpose as they cultivate their plots. The garden offers a therapeutic escape from the bustle of daily life while providing an opportunity to reconnect with the earth. One of the many ways our garden contributes to the community is through a dedicated plot that yields healthy, fresh food donations for DEAM (Decatur-area Emergency Assistance Ministry). DEAM is a vital program primarily supported by 22 area churches, united in their mission to meet the emergency needs of those less fortunate in our community. The garden club, a close-knit group of passionate individuals, garden annually from January to December. Together, they share their knowledge, experiences, and love for gardening, creating a supportive and inspiring environment. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a curious novice, joining the garden club offers an opportunity to learn, grow, and forge lasting friendships.

Each year, City of Decatur residents have the opportunity to rent a plot within the garden, providing them with their own patch of green paradise. For a modest fee of $75 per year, you can cultivate your garden dreams and reap the rewards of your labor. The satisfaction of growing your own produce and the camaraderie within the garden club make this a truly enriching experience.
