The City of Decatur is committed to making streets safer and more accessible for everyone. Through education, community partnerships, and safety initiatives, the City continues to promote safe walking and bicycling habits while working to reduce pedestrian and bicycle injuries and create a more connected, walkable, and bike-friendly community.
What We’re Doing
Bike Safety & Skills Classes
- Bicycle safety courses for children
- Certified League Cycling Instructor (LCI)-led bike safety classes for adults and youth
- Workshops on bicycle safety and traffic laws for law enforcement
Pedestrian Awareness & Safe Walking Initiatives
- Safe Routes to School programs to encourage students to walk or bike safely

- Bike Rodeos: Interactive safety events for kids, featuring obstacle courses, helmet fittings, and bike tune-ups

Driver Awareness & Enforcement Training
- Pace Car Program: Encouraging drivers to commit to safer speeds and pedestrian awareness
- Defensive driving courses for city employees and community members
- Law enforcement training on bicycle and pedestrian laws
