Workshop/Open House December 9, 2021

An open house and workshop for Re-Imagine West Howard – The SEQUEL! and for the Railroad Crossing Improvements @ Atlanta Avenue was held on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021. The purpose of the workshop  was to help Landis-Evans & Partners and Atkins plan the replacement of the colorful planters on West Howard Avenue, to take the next steps in the Re-Imagine West Howard plan with permanent bicycle/pedestrian safety and landscape improvements, and complete the plans for the new railroad crossing. The workshop offered residents the opportunity provide suggestions, ask questions and help complete the planning for these important pedestrian safety, traffic calming and bicycle trail improvements.

Materials used at the workshop are available for review below. If you have comments, please send them to Hugh Saxon, Deputy City Manager, at hugh.saxon@decaturga.com.

Background

In September, 2021, the City Commission approved planning for permanent traffic calming, bicycle/pedestrian safety and landscape improvements to replace the planters on West Howard Avenue. This reflects the major recommendations of the Re-Imagine West Howard Avenue plan. More information is available in the Re-Imagine West Howard Final Report at decaturga.com/publicworks/page/reimagine-west-howard-avenue-final-report.

In August, 2019, the City Commissioners approved the concept plan for Railroad Crossing Improvements @ Atlanta Avenue. The plan includes a new, simplified crossing at Adair Street between West Howard Avenue and West College Avenue and a modern traffic signal system at the new railroad crossing and at Olympic Place.  This plan has been given preliminary approval by CSX and the Georgia Department of Transportation. Additional information can be found at decaturga.com/cmo/page/railroad-crossing-improvements-atlanta-avenue.

The 2021-22 City budget also includes funding for a traffic calming plan on Adair Street. City staff will be available to discuss what’s next in this process.
