Land use policies and zoning regulations have existed in Decatur since 1925, and are designed to protect, preserve, and enhance the city's residential, mixed-use, and commercial neighborhoods.
The Planning Commission developed a comprehensive land use and zoning plan in 1988 that was approved by the City Commission, which serves as a guide for future land use and zoning decisions. The plan is reviewed and amended periodically to reflect changing conditions and community goals.
The Planning and Zoning Division deals with all aspects of the built environment, including long-range planning, housing affordability, historic preservation, and plan reviews. For questions regarding permits, the permitting process, or specialized topics, please refer to the Design, Environment and Construction page for individual staff contacts.
