Services We Offer

family studying a fire safety escape plan

The City of Decatur is popular on Social Media. We demonstrate many of our services on these platforms and often challenge followers and community members to challenges or invite them to participate in training with us. Join us on Instagram decaturgafire or www.facebook.com/Decaturfireandrescue. Some of the things you will see us doing are:

  • Fire Watch/Safety Officer: You may hire a firefighter or safety officer by going to https://www.cognitoforms.com/CityOfDecatur2/firewatchsafetyofficerfee. For movies or filming needs contact Shirley Baylis at shirley.baylis@decaturga.com.
  • Child passenger car seat installs: Certified technicians will inspect your child passenger car seat and show you how to correctly install and use it. When inventory allows, a seat may be provided for those in need with proof of government assistance such as TANF or SNAP.  We do not provide seats for foster children as that expense is reimbursable to the caregiver through DEFACS.
  • Home inspections: Home inspections provide an opportunity to inspect for fire safety issues in the home, provide measures to improve the safety of residents, and increase fire safety and awareness outreach.
  • Project Safe Haven: Unwanted newborns may be dropped off at the fire station if the infant is 30 days or younger.
  • Smoke detector, carbon monoxide installations/blitz: alert residents in the community about the importance of having working smoke alarms and to install new alarms in homes where needed.
  • Blood pressure checks: Community members can stop by the fire stations for a blood pressure check. Along with professional guidance the community members can track their blood pressure daily. The Firefighters will evaluate the patient’s condition and make the necessary recommendations if medical advice is required.
  • Food drive: A form of charity that is conducted by a group of individuals or a corporation to stockpile and distribute foodstuffs to people who cannot afford food. Containers are at Station 1, Station 2, and the Decatur Recreation Center.
  • File of Life: Allows First Responders to immediately begin the best possible treatment, notify loved ones, and pass this vital data on to awaiting physicians at the emergency room.
  • Smart 911: A smartphone application linked with the emergency telephone number from the United States (911). This application allows people to enter the information they want  911 operators  to have in case of emergency.
  • Fire safety presentations: Educational presentations to help fire departments and schools teach community residents how to prevent home fires, and how to react in the event of a fire.
  • Fire extinguisher classes: Teaching residents the proper way to use extinguishers in an emergency, and the difference between types and when they should be used.
  • CPR training: Teaching community members CPR and assisting those who have achieved a CPR license to keep up to date with their re-certification and is free to all residents.
  • Pet sticker program: Providing stickers for community members to apply to the entry of their homes to notify the fire department of the amount and type of pets inside in the event of an emergency.
  • Winter storm senior welfare checks: Providing welfare checks to seniors during inclement weather events during the winter.
  • Special needs education class: Providing education concerning special needs children and adults. Providing class attendees with the proper abilities to encourage conversation, trust and growth between themselves and the special needs persons.
  • Both stations serve as registered “safe place” sites: Provides access to immediate help and supportive resources for youth in need. As a community initiative, the program designates                schools, fire stations, libraries, and other youth-friendly organizations as Safe Place locations, which display the yellow and black sign.
  • Community Blood Drives: Decatur Fire partners with LifeSouth to bring a blood drive to Station One once every two months (that's how often you can donate whole blood) so you can help us fill this vital need without leaving your community! Our next drive will be July 30th from 11am until 5pm.
