Report Graffiti

In 2010, the City Commission adopted an ordinance to provide for the enforcement, removal and prevention of graffiti. Graffiti is the most common type of vandalism in the United States and the city has noticed an increase in the amount of it on properties, signs and surfaces recently, although the graffiti does not appear to be the “gang-related” signal graffiti.

According to Bureau of Justice statistics, 80 percent of all graffiti is considered “tagging,” or simple one-color monikers, and that is the type of graffiti vandalism currently found around the city.

The ordinance provides that if the graffiti can be seen on the exterior of any part of a property, the owner is responsible for its removal within 15 days. Private property owners who wish to report criminal acts of vandalism on their property should call the Police department at 404-373-6551.

In conjunction with passing the ordinance, the city has implemented an operating standard to remove graffiti from city properties and facilities within 24 hours of receiving notice. Please send any graffiti sightings and complaints to reportgraffiti@decaturga.com; or call the Public Works department, 404-377-5571, to report graffiti nuisances on public property, including signs and fences.
