In 2018, Decatur’s Community Transportation Plan set forth general safety improvement recommendations for North Decatur Road’s long-discussed intersection with Superior Avenue. In 2020, hundreds of residents participating in the city’s 10-year Strategic Planning process rallied behind those recommendations and reaffirmed the need for action along the corridor.
The project, called Street Smarts: The North Decatur Road Initiative, aims to make the city’s northern edge a safer and more habitable roadway for pedestrians, bicyclists, those with disabilities, motorists, and adjacent property owners.
COMPLEX BUT ACHIEVABLE
The intersection of North Decatur Road and Superior Avenue is located within Decatur's boundaries. This complicates matters because improvements at the intersection may not necessarily affect vehicle behavior along the rest of the corridor. A comprehensive solution will require collaboration between the City of Decatur, DeKalb County, MARTA, Emory University, and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).
BANG FOR THE BUCK
This project will benefit mobility and safety. It also allows us to address a task in our Stormwater Master Plan: fixing flooding issues on N. Decatur Road caused by inadequate inlet capacity. This can be achieved as part of our North Decatur and Superior intersection improvements.
