The City of Decatur has launched a speed‑management study for West Ponce de Leon Avenue, focusing on the segment between Upland Road and Pinetree Drive. This corridor is an important connection between nearby neighborhoods, downtown Decatur, schools, parks, and local destinations, and the study will help identify improvements that support safer travel for everyone walking, rolling, biking, and driving.

Residents are encouraged to participate in shaping the project. The first public meeting will be held Wednesday, June 24, from 5:30–7:00 p.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, located at 636 W. Ponce de Leon Ave.

The study responds to community concerns about speeding, cut‑through traffic, and shifting travel patterns following recent regional roadway projects. West Ponce was also identified in the City’s Safety Action Plan as a corridor where targeted speed‑management strategies could meaningfully improve safety.

As part of this effort, the City will evaluate existing roadway conditions, traffic speeds, crash history, and safety treatments. Community feedback will guide the selection of improvements.

Potential treatments may include roadway reconfiguration, lane narrowing, enhanced crosswalks, and other traffic‑calming features designed to support safer, more predictable travel along the corridor.

The engagement and design process will move quickly—over approximately three to four months—to ensure improvements can be implemented in a timely manner. City staff will continue working closely with residents throughout the study to ensure the final recommendations reflect community priorities.
