An Update on Annexation
January 2017 - The City Commission and the Board of Education of the City Schools of Decatur met in late 2016 and have begun discussions about how to approach annexation in the coming years. The Board of Education has requested that the City not accept any additional annexation applications from single-family residential properties until policies and plans are developed and adopted by the City Commission and Board of Education. Annexation is an ever evolving issue for the City and for the Board of Education. Circumstances have been known to change quickly that could require action to be taken swiftly but this is the best information that is available today.
School Superintendent David Dude and City Manager Peggy Merriss are working on developing metrics to measure the impact of annexation on the City and on City Schools for the Board of Education and the City Commission to potentially consider later this year. Additionally, it is their intent to determine if a plan can be developed that satisfies the metrics adopted by the City and Board.
Therefore, single-family residential annexations are not being accepted by the City of Decatur at this time.
