The City manages waste collection for approximately 6,000 households. Recycling services for these homeowners is provided through a contract with Latham Home Sanitation Company. Although commercial and multi-family buildings are not required to use City of Decatur as their waste hauler, the Public Works Department is pleased to be able to provide service to these properties, and we pride ourselves on excellent customer service. Our recycling services include single stream collection of the items listed below. Materials collected by both Latham Home Sanitation and Decatur Public Works are taken to either the SP Recycling Facility in Forest Park, Georgia or Pratt Industries in East Point, Georgia. For more information about the City of Decatur's solid waste and recycling services for residential, commercial, or multi-family buildings contact Sean Woodson, Solid Waste Superintendent at firstname.lastname@example.org or 404-377-5571.

Residents have access to free 18-gallon recycling bins (standard green bins) through the City's contract with Latham Home Sanitation. If your current bin is damaged, you may also request a replacement. To request a bin call (678) 858-5407. Hours of operation are 8am-4pm Monday-Friday. For those customers who prefer a larger container, 95-gallon blue carts may be purchased upon request from Latham Home Sanitation for $68.00. These carts will hold nearly five and a half times that of a regular recycling bin. These carts may also now be purchased at the Intown Ace Hardware store on Scott Boulevard. Prices vary.
Residents may also purchase their own recycling bins at a home improvement store. We ask that residents select a size that can be reasonably lifted by pick up crews, and that the bins be clearly marked. The Public Works Department has recycling stickers that can be added to bins, or you may mark them yourself provided it is clear. To obtain a sticker call 404-377-5571.
All garbage, trash, recyclables, and yard trimmings must be ready for collection by 7:30am. on collection day. Collector arrival time will vary according to many conditions, but in no event will a collector arrive before 7:30am. For more information on solid waste collections click HERE.

Twice a year, in October and March, the city holds an Electronics Recycling Day. This semi-annual event has been dramatically successful in diverting electronic equipment from landfills, where they may contaminate soil and water.

In 2007, the Decatur City Commission has approved an amendment to the solid waste ordinance to provide better accessibility for recycling for multi-family residents of the city. The ordinance affects approximately 2,600 multi-family dwelling units within the city limits.
Multi-family properties are sometimes only equipped with a common dumpster for waste collection without any recycling services. Residents either collect their own recycling and deposit it at a remote location or throw recyclable items in with everyday trash. With the new amendment, multi-family property owners and condominium associations must provide recycling services to their residents that include at least four materials to recycle such as paper, glass, metal, and plastic.
Multi-family properties are not required to use the City of Decatur Solid Waste service and can contract with third party collection companies. Therefore, these residents did not necessarily receive the same recycling services as single-family dwellings. The purpose of the amendment is to provide residents living in multi-family dwelling properties similar recycling services to those living in single-family homes.
