2008 Decorate Decatur Contest Winners

Commissioner’s Cup Winner

101 Cottonwood Pl.
Let it snow! This home makes the most of its highly visible corner lot location facing Adair Street with a handsome eye-catching holiday theme of oversized snowflakes combined with a generous display of blue and white lights that extend to the side yards. The judges note that the decorations provide visual appeal by day as well as dazzle when lit up at night.

Winners

128 Fairview Ave.
This home stands out with a dazzling display that begins with two trees at the curb, heavily covered with red lights and shiny ornaments. A double row of lighted candy canes leads to the welcoming front porch festooned with more lights, ribbon and lighted snowflakes. A brightly lit Christmas tree is visible just inside the front door. A large lighted wreath and single candles in the windows add the perfect finishing touches.

506 Clairemont Ave.
Recently featured on the Decatur Candlelight Tour of Homes, this home has its entire roofline -- including all gables front, back and sides -- outlined in white lights. (The judges took special note of the technical challenges inherent in this approach which is not often attempted by most homeowners.) Elegant oversized wreaths complete the decor.

103 Superior Ave.
The judges noted, with appreciation, this retro theme of old-fashioned oversized multi-color lights that outline the unique architectural features of this Great Lakes home and extend along the garden fences on both sides. A Merry Christmas sign glows on the chimney and the quaint entrance is accented with lighted garland and topiaries.
205 Adair St.
This perennial favorite display gets better every year. The small traditional front yard overflows with Santa at the controls of a large Christmas train complete with a smoking stack, wooden cutouts of a dairy cow and assorted snowmen, and shrubbery covered with lights. The judges note the addition of a humor component positioned front and center. They advise the curious to drive down Adair Street for the answer to this question: "What do you get when you cross a snowman with a baker?"
119 Adair Street
Working with the theme “There’s No People like Snow People," this display features Marilyn Monsnow, part of a small collection of homemade snowpeople accented with lights and luminaria.
228 3rd Ave.
An extravagant, nostalgic cut-out display of Santa's sleigh with his reindeer at the ready, Rudolph included! A classic "Coca-Cola" Santa stands off to the side enjoying a pause that refreshes before his annual journey begins, while Mrs. Claus watches from the porch.

434 2nd Ave.
With an array of decorations placed all over the yard, including Santa on the front porch, this corner lot display provides plenty to see -- and hear -- as one approaches from any direction. The judges were particularly impressed by the inflatable band playing music, clearly visible and audible from Oakview Drive. It is the judges' hope that many will venture forth throughout the holiday season to experience these sights and sounds for themselves.

356 Winnona Dr.
This display generated a collective "awww" from the judges upon viewing Charlie Brown decorating his Christmas tree with a single red ornament as Linus and Snoopy look on. The judges wish to remind those who visit this display that the blue ribbon adorning Snoopy's decorated dog house was awarded by a panel of judges totally separate from Decorate Decatur.
1436 Allen Wilson Terr.
The lights of the new Decatur High School Stadium are dim in comparison to the bounteous array of lights on display at this address just across the street facing Commerce Dr. Lighted deer graze in the lawn amongst the lighted candy canes and spiral Christmas trees. Icicle lights drip from the eaves and lights cover the shrubs. The front door is wrapped in red foil like a giant gift, and there is even a red velvet bow adorning the "Resident Parking Only" sign.

Business Winners

Greene’s Fine Foods on W. Trinity Pl.
This new Decatur business features beautifully decorated window displays that contribute wonderfully to the holiday feel of downtown Decatur while enticing passersby to peruse the treats offered inside. One judge was driven to reconsider whether the historic building itself is really constructed of marble blocks . . . or sugar cubes?
Wordsmith’s on the Square
Yes, it's Christmastime in our city! This popular book store exudes the holiday spirit with creative hand-cut giant snowflakes, each one unique and beautiful. It is rumored that one snowflake features mermaid shapes in the design. The judges encourage busy shoppers and passersby to pause at Wordsmiths over the holidays and see if they can identify which one it is!
Parker’s on Ponce
Decatur's newest restaurant makes its debut just off the square with beautiful, tasteful oversize wreaths clearly visible from E. Ponce de Leon Avenue.

Neighborhoods

Adair Street for the theme "There’s No People Like Snow People.” Judges' choice for "Definitely Worth the Drive." Drive slowly and carefully down this narrow street so you don't miss a thing!

West Hill Street, near the intersection of McDonough, judges' choice for "So Decatur." This cluster of neighbors goes all out with generous displays of lights and decorative displays in what has become a Decatur tradition.

The judges want to recognize the City of Decatur for the extended decorated streetscapes that welcome visitors as they enter the downtown area from the west end of Ponce de Leon Avenue as well as the east, north and south.
