Decatur is a city of approximately 22,000 residents living within a little more than four square miles. It has long been known as a destination for young families and retirees to relocate. Decatur has a renowned school system, a vast network of parks and community gardens, an active lifestyle that includes a highly walkable downtown, and a variety of transit options including three Marta stations and biking alternatives. The city has worked towards becoming a Lifelong Community as a result of discussions with residents and other stakeholders to develop the 2000 and 2010 Strategic Plans. The 2010 Strategic Plan was adopted after holding a series of Round Table discussions and Community Academies that included 1,500 Decaturites.
In 2003, Decatur partnered with a local nonprofit organization to hold an annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project to perform home repairs, weatherization, handicap adaptations, and yard work for low and fixed income senior homeowners. In 2011, Decatur established the community-based Zoning Ordinance Revision Task Force to study Strategic Plan zoning recommendations and obtain further public input on revisions to existing ordinances. Decatur established a“vision-based” budgeting process to incorporate the community’s vision as outlined in the 2010 Strategic Plan into each annual budget. The 2012-2013 Decatur Budget includes dedicating a staff member to develop LLC strategies and expand current programs.
New Lifelong Community initiatives include a Lifelong Community Advisory Board and a Wednesday GO60+ Shuttle for residents aged 60 and over from Oakhurst to downtown Decatur. Contact Lee Ann Harvey at 678-553-6548 or email@example.com for more information.
The Lifelong Community Advisory Board hosts several informational talks throughout the year, primarily on the Third Thursday of the month. 2016 talks include:
