Safe Routes to School logoSafe Routes to School (SRTS) is a national program that empowers communities to make walking and bicycling to school a safe and routine activity. Program goals are to have more students and adults active to help improve fitness levels, to reduce congestion around schools, and to improve air quality around schools. Decatur has had an active SRTS program since 2005. Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, the Decatur Active Living Division took on the management and development of Decatur’s program.

NEW! Bike to School Poster Contest 2017

May is National Bike month and Decatur Safe Routes to School invites children in all participating schools to enter the second annual Bike to School Month poster contest. Children in grades k-8 are invited to design a poster illustrating bike safety. For example, a poster could  show  a bike rider using h and signals, or it could stress the importance of wearing a helmet. Creativity is encouraged!

A panel of judges will select four winners who will receive a gift certificate from our sponsor, Bicycle South. For more information about the contest and the entry form click here.

Deadline is March 10 at 3 p.m. All entries will be turned in to the child's school.

We have a new Safe Routes to School Map!

Each school has designated safe routes to their school. Decatur Active Living partnered with the City's Planning Division to put them all on one map. We think this will be very helpful for both parents and children as they plan their walking and/or biking route to school. Crossing Guard locations are also included.

Winnona Park has had a large increase in Walk & Roll to School Day participation since Mrs. Hadley became the School Champion. Jessie has a lot of energy and for International Walk & Roll day in 2013, 50% of the students participated and that increased in 2014 to 56%.
