Safety Tips from the Decatur Police
Bicycle Safety
A bicycle is a vehicle and must adhere to the uniform rules of the road just as any other vehicle. Accidents while riding in traffic are often the result of avoidable errors. For a safer ride every time, learn – and obey – these rules and laws governing bikes on the roadway:
- Ride with the flow of traffic.
- Stay to the right of the curb lane.
- When moving to the center of the lane to turn, be aware of the motorists around you and keep your eyes open for approaching hazards.
- Obey traffic signals and stop signs. It is sometimes difficult to stop for a stop sign while clipped to your pedals. If you are unable to unclip, slow down and perform a visual scan of the intersection. Make a quick stop and if the intersection is free of motorists continue through.
