Public Safety and Emergency Management

Communications/911
Housed and supervised by the police department, Communications staff handle incoming calls and dispatch all calls to police and fire units in the field.

Emergency Management 
Directs the city's emergency planning, response and recovery efforts and oversees the police and fire departments to ensure that the city is as well prepared as possible for any emergency.

Fire Department
Known and appreciated for fast response times, fire fighting personnel cover three 24-hour shifts. All firefighters are state certified.

Police Department
Under the leadership of a new chief, the employees of this department provide police protection services and conduct community crime prevention programs.

Overview
Public safety functions are covered by emergency management, the fire and police departments, the Communications/911 system and municipal court. In addition, public works staff is called in to serve as first responders as needed.

Fire protection services are provided through programs of fire prevention, enforcement of the city's fire codes and fire suppression. Police protection services are provided through programs of proactive patrolling, crime prevention and crime investigation. Employees also provide information and general assistance to the public; special emergency services in hazardous materials incidents, extreme weather conditions, and similar emergencies; and assistance to emergency medical service personnel when requested.
