City Clerk's Office

Bookkeeper - $27,040-$39,998

Police Department

Administrative Assistant - This is highly responsible work coordinating the administrative activities of the Police Department including the performance of moderately complex secretarial duties. Work involves the coordination of office activities and relieving the Police Chief of routine administrative details. Work also involves the maintenance of personnel files, monitoring of purchase requisitions and the transcribing of confidential documents, records and reports. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Police Chief with some latitude for independent action.

Administrative Assistant-Investigations - This is responsible clerical and secretarial support work performing word processing and file management duties on a personal computer for the Criminal Investigations or Fire Division. Work involves typing, transcribing, finger printing, and issuing permits. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Police Chief.

Assistant Police Chief - This is technical, supervisory and administrative law enforcement work responsible for the planning, directing and evaluating of police personnel work on an assigned watch or section to ensure the protection of life and property and enforcement of laws and ordinances. Responsibilities include supervision of one of the following functions: Uniform Patrol; or, Training and Communications; or, Criminal Investigations and Special Units. Work requires discretion and judgment in interpreting departmental policies, laws and ordinances in evaluating the effectiveness of subordinates. This position participates in all difficult police situations and exercises supervision over subordinated employees following standard procedures. Work is performed independently in accordance with established regulations and reviewed through reports and an evaluation of results achieved. Worked performed under the general supervision of the Police Chief.

Communications Officer - This is telecommunications work in monitoring City service radios, answering incoming telephone calls and dispatching emergency services personnel and equipment. Work involves the operation of radios, telephones, alarm board, computer terminals and printers and recording equipment. Police, Fire, Emergency Service and Animal Control calls are received 24 hours every day from the public. The position also monitors radios for status of City employees and calls. State and national crime information networks are maintained and records for all calls are established. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Communications Supervisor.

Community Relations Specialist - This is non-sworn professional administrative work responsible for the communication to the community regarding police and community relations. Work is performed independently and requires effective oral and written communication skills. Work involves serving as a liaison between neighborhood associations and citizens and the City. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Police Chief.

Communications Supervisor - This position serves as a supervisor to clerical employees on an assigned shift and performs telecommunications work in monitoring city services radios, answering incoming telephone calls and dispatching emergency services personnel and equipment. The position prepares or supervises the preparation of bank deposits and reports for payments received for fees bonds, fines, traffic citations, installment payments and other payments to the department. This position also serves as court clerk. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Police Chief.

Master Police Officer - This is general law enforcement work of protecting life and property and enforcing laws and ordinances. Work involves routine patrol work such as responding to emergency calls, citizen complaints and alarms. Duties include preliminary investigations, special detail assignments, administrative duties and other special assignments and gives specific instructions and assistance when guidance or patrol backup is needed. Work requires independent judgment and discretion in difficult or unusual situations. Work involves personal danger. This status is attained after five years of service as a police officer with the City Of Decatur and requires passing a promotional process. Work is performed under the close supervision of a police superior officer.

Police Chief - This is important administrative, professional and managerial work responsible for planning and directing the operations of the Police Department. Work involves general responsibility for the planning, development and direction of all programs and policies. Administrative duties include budget development and administration, policy development and personnel administration. Represents the department in working with other legal authorities, governmental agencies and the media. Work is performed under the direction of the City Manager.

Police Officer I - This is entry-level law enforcement work of protecting life and property and enforcing laws and ordinances. Work involves routine patrol work such as responding to emergency calls, citizen complaints and alarms. Duties include preliminary investigations, special detail assignments, administrative duties and other special assignments and gives specific instructions and assistance when guidance or patrol backup is needed. Work requires independent judgment and discretion in difficult or unusual situations. Work involves personal danger. P. O. S. T. certification and field training must be completed within the first twelve months of employment. Work is performed under close supervision of a Police superior officer.

Police Officer II - This is general law enforcement work of protecting life and property and enforcing laws and ordinances. Work involves routine patrol work such as responding to emergency calls, citizen complaints and alarms. Duties include preliminary investigations, special detail assignments, administrative duties and other special assignments and gives specific instructions and assistance when guidance or patrol backup is needed. Work requires independent judgment and discretion in difficult or unusual situations. Work involves personal danger.

Police Investigator - This is specialized law enforcement work responsible for the investigation of reported or suspected incidents of criminal activity including homicide, burglary, larceny, narcotics sale and use and other illegal activities to identify and arrest perpetrators, recover stolen property and provide sufficient information and evidence to allow prosecution of suspects. Work involves crime scene searches, photographing and or diagramming scene evidence, collecting any physical evidence, identifying and interviewing witnesses and arresting suspects. The position receives reports of crimes in progress, reports of recently discovered crimes and incidents reports prepared by police officers. Work requires independent judgment and discretion in difficult or unusual situations. Work involves personal danger. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Sergeant and/or Lieutenant.

Police Lieutenant - This is supervisory and administrative law enforcement work responsible for planning, directing and evaluating of police personnel work on an assigned watch or section to ensure the protection of life and property and enforcement of laws and ordinances. Serves as Watch Commander on an assigned shift. Work involves the monitoring of radio communications to ensure preventative patrol and call and response operations are conducted in accordance with accepted standards of police operations and departmental policies and that officers have back up assistance available as needed. Work also involves a wide variety of administrative duties including making daily work assignments, determining that assigned personnel are available for duty and calling in replacements as authorized, and holding training sessions on laws or procedures. Work requires independent judgment and discretion in difficult or unusual situations. Work involves personal danger. Work is performed under the Police Major of that section.

Police Sergeant -
This is law enforcement supervisory work ensuring the protection of life and property and enforcement of laws and ordinances by police officers on an assigned watch or investigators on the Criminal Investigations Section. Work involves the monitoring of radio communications to ensure preventative patrol and call response operations are conducted in accordance with accepted standards of police operations and departmental policies and that officers have back up assistance available as needed. Work also involves a wide variety of administrative duties including making daily work assignments, determining that assigned personnel are available for duty and calling replacements as authorized, holding daily roll call sessions and holding training sessions on laws or procedures. At scenes of major crimes or accidents, incumbents assume command until relieved by a ranking officer. In the absence of a ranking officer on assigned watch, incumbents serve as watch commanders and supervise all activities on a shift. Work requires independent judgment and discretion in difficult or unusual situations. Work involves personal danger. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Lieutenant over that section.

Support Services Technician - This is general support of the Uniform Patrol Division, Criminal Investigation Division and 911 Center. Schedule and maintain regular and emergency maintenance for division vehicles and keep records of work performed. Performs light maintenance and equipment installation as required. Procure uniforms and equipment for division staff and maintain inventory of equipment. Orders and maintains supplies for building operation from City Central Supply. Recruits and supervises School Crossing Guards. Work requires self-motivation and independent judgment.
