CodeRED Emergency
Notification System
The CodeRED Emergency Notification System is a high-speed CodeRED Emergency Notication System is a telephone communication service that allows us to quickly notify citizens of emergency situations requiring immediate action.
All residential phone numbers in the BellSouth/AT&T system should be in the telephone database. All city of Decatur businesses should register, as well as individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the last year, and who use a cellular phone as their primary home phone.
>Register your phone numbers
The system can dial up to 50,000 phone numbers per hour and deliver a recorded message to individuals or their answering machines. It will be used for emergencies such as:
• Drinking water contamination
• Utility outage
• Evacuation notice and route
• Missing person
• Fires or floods
• Bomb threat
• Hostage situation
• Chemical spill or gas leak
• Other emergency incidents where rapid and accurate notification is essential.
CodeRED Expands to Include Weather Warning
The City of Decatur has expanded its CodeRED Emergency Notification System to include the option of a CodeRED Weather Warning that is designed to deliver severe weather warning to resident’s telephones within seconds after being issued by the National Weather Service. Weather notifications are issued for the immediate threats of severe thunderstorm warnings, flash flood warnings and tornado warnings.
Subscribers receive warning messages any time severe weather threatens the City of Decatur/DeKalb County area. The CodeRED Weather Warning will not call everyone on the list, only the immediately affected areas. The information is based on instant satellite feeds and latitude/longitude coordinates and uses new polygon warning methodologies thus eliminating many false alarms associated with prior notification methods.
The City of Decatur does not initiate the call-outs – it is done automatically via the proactive Weather Warning system upon notification by the National Weather Service (NWS).
If you would like to participate in the Weather Warning program, you must register. Only residents who sign up to receive the warnings will be contacted.

How is the CodeRED Weather Warning different from the CodeRED Emergency Notification System?
• Residents have to “opt-in” and register for the service.
• The calls are generated automatically when a National Weather Service Bulletin has been issued for the area – they are not initiated by the City.
