To improve the community's image through the proactive enforcement of care-of-premises codes.

Codes Enforcement

The City of Decatur Codes Enforcement is housed within the Public Works Department. Cynthia Hardnett is trained to do codes enforcement-related tasks such as investigating complaints for illegally posted signs, overgrown property, abandoned vehicles, enforcing standards, housing codes, etc.

Codes enforcement officials report that the most common violations are related to property maintenance, abandoned vehicles, building without a permit, real estate signs and signs on telephone poles. The City vests these officials with the authority to uphold the code of ordinances; people who do not voluntarily comply may be issued citations and required to appear in the City's municipal court.
