Public Works projects focus on the need for a new facility and implementation of the Decatur Cemetery Master Plan.
New Facility
Decatur has outgrown its existing public works building and needs a new one. The current building houses both engineering and sanitation operations and is located at the intersection of Talley Street and Sams Street in the heart of the evolving East Decatur Station project area.
The city is working to identify relocation options for Public Works that will include space for the public works operations for City Schools of Decatur. The current school public works will be displaced by the planned construction of the new gymnasium and performing arts facility at Decatur High School. By joining together to construct a joint public works facility, the City of Decatur and the City Schools of Decatur can make more effective use of the funding each has budgeted for this project. Approximately $3.5 million is earmarked for the project.
Decatur Cemetery Master Plan
The plan was completed in 2005. The bond budget includes funds for design and engineering of the planned improvements and the construction of these improvements. Some costs for storm drainage and stream bank improvements included in the master plan are eligible for funding through other sources and grants with bond funds providing the needed matching funds. The sale of new cemetery lots created as a result of this project will also offset some of the costs of the improvements. The total amount of bond funding identified for this project is approximately $795,000.
