Decatur Old House Fair Returns!
 Saturday, March 6, 2010

Jane Powell, author of the "Bungalow"series will be a guest lecturer!
 
Ms. Powell will be speaking from 10 am to 11:30 am and will be available to sign books from 1-4 p.m. Her lecture will discuss the bungalow style and what makes this style home unique and endearing to bungalow owners and bungalow fans alike. Her lecture will also provide insight into the whole experience of a bungalow and the way historic features are combined with other elements to create this authentic arts and crafts home type.  For more information on her books, go to www.janepowell.org.


Decatur is holding the Decatur Old House Fair on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the Decatur Holiday Inn and Conference Plaza located at 130 Clairemont Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030.

This year's event will have over 30 exhibitors, 12 seminars, and 2 hands on workshops for wood window restoration.  We are updating the website on a weekly basis so be sure to visit www.decaturoldhousefair.com

 Tickets are $10 in advance at $15 at the dooor and are available on line through the website or go to www.brownpapertickets.com/event/97692.

Exhibitors will include contractors, plumbers, electricians, furniture and furnishings, chimney experts, wood floor experts, painters, and many other tradespeople who have expertise in old house repairs and restoration.  Seminars include:

Annual Decatur Design Awards in May 2010

Every year the Decatur Historic Preservation Commission seeks nominations for the Decatur Design Awards which recognizes projects that promote preservation and excellence in design in Decatur.  Nominations will be accepted from March 1 - April 9, 2010.  Please send a description and digital photos of the project to Regina Brewer at regina.brewer@decaturga.com.  The ceremony will be held in May in celebration of National Preservation Month.


Decatur Receives Product Development Grant from Georgia Tourism Bureau for Historic Decatur Cemetery

The City of Decatur received a $3,700 grant from the Georgia Tourism Bureau to conduct a topographical survey of the historic sections of the Decatur Cemetery.  The goal of this grant is to assist the City in developing the Cemetery as a heritage tourism site and increase awareness of Decatur's rich history and cultural landscapes.  For additional information regarding this grant, please contact Regina Brewer at regina.brewer@decaturga.com


Decatur Receives Grant for Downtown National Register Nomination 

Decatur receives grant to nominate Decatur downtown to the National Register of Historic Places
The city has received a $6,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to prepare a nomination to place Decatur's historic downtown on the National Register.  Properties listed on the National Register have access to significant tax incentive programs for certified rehabilitation projects.  Properties listed on the National Register are not subject to regulation.  For additional information, please contact Preservation Planner Regina Brewer at regina.brewer@decaturga.com.  For additional information on the National Register of Historic Places, please go to www.nps.gov/history/nr.


Decatur's Ponce de Leon Court to be nominated to the National Register of Historic Places!
The historic Ponce de Leon Court neighborhood has been nominated to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its importance to the history of Decatur's development and its unique architectural and landscape features. The nomination was accepted by the Historic Preservation Division's National Register Unit who will review the application and submit it to the Georgia National Register Review Board for approval.  Decatur Historic Resource Survey Completed

The City of Decatur and its consultants Keystone Preservation and Morrison Design completed the citywide historic resource survey.  The results of that survey were presented to the public and will be made available online in the near future.  For specific questions on the project, please contact Regina Brewer at regina.brewer@decaturga.com.

About the Historic Preservation Commission:

The Commission was established by local ordinance to ensure that renovations and new construction in Decatur's four Local Historic Districts are consistent with the character of the neighborhood. The three districts are the McDonough-Adams-King's Highway District, Ponce de Leon Court, Old Decatur, and the Clairemont Historic District. The Commission must approve exterior projects to homes located within these districts by issuing a Certificate of Appropriateness before a building permit can be issued.
