After School Counselor-SY 17-18

Location: Schools and community centers in Decatur, GA
School Year: 2017-2018 (August 2017-May 2018)
Work Hours: 2:00 pm - 6:15 pm Monday-Friday (school days); some Saturdays and evenings for training. Position starts immediately, no leave offered.

The City of Decatur is seeking energetic, outgoing Counselors that are willing to serve a significant role by offering children and youth opportunities to learn new skills, improve grades, develop relationships with others, and prepare for a successful career. These skills can also be critical in helping youth develop in positive ways and to avoid behavior problems and conflict.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Reporting to the Site Director, the Counselor is responsible for following age-appropriate lesson plans that contain recreational, educational and cultural activities for children.

-Provide supervision and discipline of participants within the established guidelines of the program.
-Establish and maintain positive lines of communication with parents and/or guardians of participants, including daily conversations and/or phone calls, writing articles for weekly newsletters in regards to the daily welfare of their children.
-Maintain daily attendance records of participants.
-Maintain program and storage areas by ensuring they are clean and safe for participant’s usage.
-Responsible for reporting damaged or unsafe equipment to the Site Director.
-Represent the City of Decatur Children and Youth Services division on field trips, special events, assemblies and program-wide activities as assigned.
-Attend training and bi-monthly staff meetings.
-Other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Requirements:

Counselor I: HS Diploma or equivalent. Must be 18 years of age, and have one year of training and/or education or equivalent experience in school-age care, child development or related fields.

Counselor II: Bachelor’s degree, CDA, TCC or an Associate’s Degree in qualifying field, Georgia Paraprofessional Certificate, plus minimum experience based on credential. Documentation verifying education is required.

Must have good interpersonal skills, a passion for working with children, leadership skills, and have no convictions of moral turpitude. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing. Must have a demonstrated competency in the planning and implementation of recreational activities.

Must be certified in CPR and first aid, or be able to obtain certification. Able to work in a variety of extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time.

Must have the ability to see, hear, bend, squat, twist and stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must have a professional demeanor and pass a criminal background and reference check.

Preferred Qualifications:
Must be familiar with and understand the goals and objectives established for the After School Program.

Must be familiar with and understand the policies and procedures for After School Program.
